For Mindful Practitioners and Beginners: A Note from Deborah
In September 2009, I had the great pleasure of meeting Thich Nhat Hanh at Deer Park in Escondido, California. I was deeply touched—and transformed—simply by being in his presence. Over the years, I have kept my focus through his teachings and books, particularly Anger and The World We Have, which inspired me to write The Magical Mindful Day. I can say without a doubt, however, that my participating in the University of California Los Angeles, Mindful Awareness Research Center (MARC), Intensive Practice Program in 2014 set in motion a chain reaction of events that have led to where I am today: a wife, mother, psychotherapist, mindfulness teacher, artist and now an author… something I never imagined possible!
I owe so much to the MARC teachers, who are not only very knowledgeable about mindfulness and the science behind it, but who also embody what they teach by being consistently mindful, kind, and compassionate in their everyday lives. The greatest gift I have received from the program is acceptance—acceptance that life is not about perpetual happiness but rather achieving a steady state of awareness by understanding—and knowing, really knowing—I have a choice in how I perceive and respond to the people and events in my life.
I owe the rest of my life to mindfulness—a debt I will happily repay by practicing it and by teaching adults and children alike of its incredible power to heal US and heal the EARTH. I hope that The Magical Mindful Day contributes to the growing conversation about the power of mindful awareness.

The Magical Mindful Day focuses on reminding youth that by being aware of what is going on inside of them as well as around them, they will keep their strong and inherent connection to the earth and thus be able to send a powerful message of love out into the world.
Children’s books about mindfulness have wide appeal today. Arguably, they are a welcome response to a stressed-out world where children feel the increasing pressure to fit in, do more, and achieve more. While many titles in the mindfulness category help young people obtain a sense of calm and balance, most fall short when it comes to underscoring the importance of caring for the earth and advising young people how to be stewards of our precious resources and protectors of all living things. As we teach the realities of global warming, pollution, water shortages, and an ocean in great distress, there is no better time for a book that weaves mindfulness into every facet of life—inside and out.
